February is National Smocking Month and we would like a core group of up to 12 children age 9 and older to enjoy learning to stitch with us on Thursday, February 19 at 9:30 a.m.- 12 noon in the lower church hall. Our activity will be smocking a hair barrette. Smocking is a form of surface embroidery with stitches taken through a preformed pleat of fabric (in this case ribbon). We will be using sharp sewing needles with embroidery floss (thread) and scissors. Last year we stitched (smocked) on a doll’s pinafore apron.
This program is being sponsored by the Charles River Smockers, a nine-year-old chapter of the Smocking Arts Guild of America (also known as SAGA). We have enjoyed meeting in facilities provided by St. John’s for several years now. Our purpose is “to preserve and foster the art of smoking and related needlework for future generations through education, communications and quality workmanship”.
To register, please email Jane Connelly at: jhc214@comcast.net. We will need a permission slip for each child signed by parent or guardian stating the child’s name, address, age, reachable phone number of the guardian during this period of time, and any allergies or special considerations noted. We will serve simple snacks and beverage. (There will be NO peanuts.)
