A Majestic Masterpiece at Saint John School

Last Supper MuralFifth grade students at Saint John School in Wellesley recently created a mural inspired by Leonardo DaVinci’s “Last Supper” in the school’s first ever collaborative art project. Art teacher Robin Kilduff developed the framework for the 5′ x 10′ mural, which fifth grade students then worked within to bring the images to life. Mrs. Kilduff remarked, “Students were offered any medium, and they chose oil crayons to color each smaller section.” The students created a sense of continuity in their design of the piece by using the same colors for each smaller mural block. Cooperation and teamwork were as important to the result as the artistic detail of the design. Student Juliette Connors explained, “I liked how everyone had to work together to match pieces.” Once students finished assembling the mural, the majestic masterpiece became the centerpiece for St. John School’s annual Art Show. The school community was thrilled with the dramatic artwork, and the School Council framed the work to preserve it for years to come.

Nancy Glaeser, School Council President, noted that images of our Lord’s Last Supper with his Apostles are a traditional fixture of many Catholic family dining rooms, along with monastery and school refectories. “Our students now gather for meals alongside this beautiful visual reminder of our community’s mission and rich traditions,” said Mrs. Glaeser. The fifth grade’s impressive mural is on display in Philbin Hall, Saint John School’s common area. School principal Robert Arsenault noted that a fifth grade class art project is an annual artistic endeavor at Saint John’s. “We eagerly await the unveiling of the next project in the spring,” said Mr. Arsenault. Fifth graders Luke Orup and Catherine Butera reached the same conclusion after working collaboratively on the mural: “This was my favorite art project of the year.”

Back To School Spruce-Ups for Saint John School

SJS_New_WebsiteAs our 50th Anniversary nears in 2015, we are celebrating several summer improvements to Saint John School. The school has launched an exciting new website!  This new site provides up to date information for prospective families as well as for the existing school community. The site now includes more colorful photography of our community in action, along with news and event listings and content which provide a glimpse into the many highlights of Saint John School. The new password protected Community Section hosts classroom pages where students and parents can find, the classroom newsletter, important study guides and learning tools as well as links to download forms. You can find the website at www.saintjohnschool.net, or by clicking the picture above.  Other exciting improvements enjoyed by our school community include:

• All corridors & administrative offices freshly painted and floors re-tiled
• School library painted
• Multiple glass encased bulletin boards installed to showcase student work on both floors
• News & events bulletin boards inside and outside main entrance to school
• Updated security system with new main entrance doors
• A framed/encased mural project inspired by ‘The Last Supper’ hand painted by last year’s Grade 5 students

These are exciting enhancements that we look forward to sharing with returning families, students and parishioners! Prospective families should contact Judy Lewis to schedule a tour or attend our upcoming Open House on Tuesday, October 7th from 8:00-9:30am or 6:30-8:00pm. Saint John School News

SaintJohnSchool_LogoAs students and families enjoy the summer vacation months, be sure to visit the Wellesley Free Library for summer reading and to view the exciting art exhibit of Saint John School student works. “Dinner with the Masters,” an exhibit located in the new book section, features several dinner place settings inspired by the works of artists such as Pollock, Albers, Riley, O’Keefe, Mondrian, Escher and Vasarely. Appearing in the cases in the Children’s section are exhibits titled ‘Klee Cats”, “The Groom’s Arrival“ and “Portrait of a Man,” all inspired by artist Paul Klee. The wavy wall in the Children’s section shows “Dancers”, a reflection of the color and movement shown in Keith Haring’s work along with our final exhibit which highlights the artistic technique of paper folding. Be sure to see our exhibits full of masterpieces!
