Thursday, October 10 at 7:30pm: St. John Book Discussion Group – “Tuesdays with Morrie”

tuesdays-with-morrieAs Christians we spend a decent amount of time pondering the range of difficult and fundamental questions surrounding the end of earthly lives — our own and those of others. Over the years we have been given a number of very helpful books on the whole subject of dying, for example Rabbi Harold Kushner’s When Bad Things Happen to Good People, C.S. Lewis’ A Grief Observed, Father Benedict Groeschel’s After This Life: What Catholics Believe About What Happens Next, the current best-seller, Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal and What Matters in the End, and Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, A Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson.

The Book Group will use the wonderful study of the last days of Morrie Schwartz and his observations on the meaning of life as the basis for our December discussion. We all have thoughts and opinions on these questions, as well as hard experience. It is helpful from time to time to share these with others, to try to deepen our understanding and make our prayers about the process of death more fruitful. Book Discussion Group Meeting – Thursday, June 18 at 7:30pm

booksThe St. John’s Book Discussion Group was created ten years ago with the basic goal of helping people to understand better the concepts, doctrines, ideas, people, events, institutions, history and relationships that make up the Catholic experience. We have done this through nine or ten meetings a year, held at the parish and focused on a particular book or publication, defined broadly to include, for example, a selection from scripture, an encyclical or a group of poems. There is no membership in the group – it has been open to everyone with an interest and a willingness to contribute to the discussions.

As we enter our second decade and embark on a new relationship with spiritual neighbors from St. Paul’s (and other parishes in the area) we feel it is appropriate to pause and consider ways we might improve the Book Discussion Group – with new members, new approaches to the selection of books and new discussion formats. We are proud of all we have accomplished – the list of books we have read is impressive and we continue to have 10-15 participants at each meetings, an ideal number for lively and fruitful discussion – but we know we can do better.

Thus, we will hold a meeting at the Parish Center (the building on the opposite side of the parking lot from the school) on Thursday evening, June 18, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. to discuss the future of the book group.

Please come and bring your ideas, suggestions and proposals for specific books or types of books you would like to read and discuss, along with any thoughts you have about organizing this wonderful effort in adult faith formation. There is no commitment — we welcome those who want to become active as well as those who just want to listen! St. John Book Discussion Group: Thursday, November 13, 7:30pm

PrintAll members of the parish are invited to the November 13 meeting of the Parish Book Discussion Group at 7:30pm in the Parish Center. The topic will be “The Synod of Bishops on the Family”, and our discussion will focus on both the process and structure of decision-making in the Vatican and the substance of the many issues discussed (or that should have been discussed!)  There has been extensive press coverage of the October meeting in Rome; thus we are asking participants in the November 13 meeting to read as much as possible and come prepared to express your conclusions, opinions, reservations, hopes and expectations. These are obviously important challenges in the life of our Church and we all have a serious responsibility to become as informed as possible. One new and wonderful source of information is CRUX, the website of Catholic news sponsored by The Boston Globe.  For further information and to give us an idea of how many will attend, please contact John Stewart (617.969.0950) or Peter Mongeau.

AFFC Book Club – First Meeting Thursday, September 11 at 7:30pm

booksFor the past ten years a group of men and women have met monthly from September to May to talk about a book on some aspect of our Catholic faith. The books have been of modest length, fiction and non-fiction, and on a broad range of topics. Participants choose the books and one person serves as moderator. Often before the meeting, a few questions or points for consideration are distributed to guide the discussion.

There are no dues or other requirements of membership. Our goal is simply one of enlightenment – to help each other better understand the concepts, ideas, people, events, institutions and relationships that make up the Catholic experience. We come together as humble men and women who share an unshakable faith in Jesus Christ, along with the realization that God has blessed us with inquiring minds and the freedom to travel along a variety of paths in our quest for a better understanding of our responsibilities as important parts of creation.

Please join us on a journey of faith, learning and Christian fellowship. We invite you to become active in the Book Discussion Group. Our first meeting is Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7:30 pm in the Parish Center to discuss The Joy of The Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium) by Pope Francis. If you would like a complete listing of the books that will be discussed in 2014/15, please visit our page on the Parish website. If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact one of the members of the 2014/2015 coordinating committee: Peter Mongeau (Chair), John Stewart, Anita Martin and Frank McConville
