FAITH MAPS LECTURE SERIES: Fr. Robert ImbelliBenedict and Francis: Light of Faith and New Evangelization
Wednesday, October 16 at 7pm in the Social Hall
The “Year of Faith” is also the historic year of two Popes: Benedict and Francis. There has been much comment about the “Francis effect,” and there is little doubt that a new style has characterized Pope Francis’ first six months as Bishop of Rome. But there is not only great respect between the two, but also a deep continuity, best seen in “the Encyclical written with four hands:” Lumen Fidei. Father Robert Imbelli, a priest of the Archdiocese of New York, has taught theology at B.C. for twenty-seven years. He studied in Rome during the Second Vatican Council and had the opportunity to return for the fiftieth anniversary of the Council and the inauguration of the Year of Faith. He also was present in Rome when Pope Francis was elected. His book, “Rekindling the Christic Imagination” will be published in June (fingers crossed!).

Collaborative FAQ 11: What Will Happen With the Finances?

SJSP Collaborative Logo_SmallQuestion 11. I know that each parish has its own Finance Council, which is responsible for the financial activities of the parish. What will happen to our Finance Council, and our finances, when we begin our Parish Collaborative?
St. John’s and St. Paul’s will continue to have two separate Finance Councils. Each parish will maintain its own identity (its own name, its buildings, its canonical rights) and this extends into the financial realm. Each parish will continue to have its own bank accounts, its own books, its own financial assets, and its own financial obligations. Common costs of the Collaborative between St. John’s and St. Paul’s (such as staffing and shared programs) will be shared between the two Parishes. Although the Finance Councils and our financial assets and liabilities will remain distinct, members of the Finance Councils will have to work together to support the mission of New Evangelization. Direction for this mission will come over time from our Pastor.

September 29: News from the AFFC

AFFC Logo“I pray the breviary every morning. I like to pray with the psalms. Then, later, I celebrate Mass. I pray the Rosary. What I really prefer is adoration in the evening, even when I get distracted and think of other things, or even fall asleep praying. In the evening then, between seven and eight o’clock, I stay in front of the Blessed Sacrament for an hour in adoration. But I pray mentally even when I am sitting at the dentist or at other times of the day.” -Pope Francis

Collaborative FAQ 10: Will Mass Times Change?

SJSP Collaborative Logo_SmallQuestion 10. When the Collaborative between St. John’s and St. Paul’s starts, will mass times change?
Mass times in each Parish have traditionally been determined at the discretion of local Pastors. After the Collaborative starts, the Pastor will seek input from his Pastoral Team and Pastoral Council regarding Mass times. The Archdiocese expects that in many places, mass schedules in Collaboratives will need adjustment.

“Prayer and Intelligence” – A New Blog from Fr. John Connelly

Fr John ConnellyDear Parishioners of  Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Sacred Heart Parish, and St. John the Evangelist Parish,
Some friends have suggested to me that I open a blog. Their motive, I am sure, is to keep me busy and out of trouble in my year(s) of retirement. As I envision things at this time, the blog will offer theological reflections directed primarily to the parishioners of Saint John the Evangelist Parish in Wellesley Hills, and to the parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish and Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, now happily joined as the first collaborative in the Garden City of Newton. My plans at the moment are to offer some reflection on the mystery of God’s grace – won for us by the Paschal Mystery of the risen Christ and distributed so generously to those who believe by the work of the Holy Spirit, working especially through the sacraments of the Church.

My message in this little notice is to say to prospective readers in the above-mentioned parishes – Check it out (Prayer and Intelligence), if you are so moved, and let me know if you come to the conclusion whether this project has a future.

Father John Connelly
