Who’s Who at St. John

HelloMyNameIsThroughout the next several weeks, St. John’s will be highlighting many of the staff members at St. John’s who make our Parish a vibrant, welcoming community. The article, Who’s Who at St. John will enable you to get to know each staff member a little bit more. The first two entries highlight members of St. John’s Music Ministries, Maria Wardwell and Chris Holownia.

WardwellMaria Wardwell – Family Mass Cantor
Maria has been cantoring with the Family Mass Musicians since 1998. A Wellesley College graduate, Maria has performed as a singer and actress her whole life. She is very involved in community theater and performs in and around the Boston area. She is the president of the Footlight Club, America’s oldest continuously running community theatre which performs at Eliot Hall in Jamaica Plain. Maria and her husband have lived in Wellesley since 1990. They have 2 sons – Nate, who is a Middle School teacher for Teach for America in Charlotte, NC and Ben, who is a sophomore at Colby College in Maine. When Maria’s not cantoring at St. John’s or performing in a production she is busy working as a Learning and Development Account Executive and Facilitator for Wilson Learning Worldwide.

HolowniaChristopher Holownia – Family Mass Music Director
Chris has been the music director for the Family Mass and Sunday 5pm Mass ever since he graduated from Yale in 2007. Chris grew up in the parish and his parents are still active parishioners. He is currently teaching foreign languages including Spanish, Latin and Chinese at the Rivers School in Weston. He advises the philosophy club at Rivers and also music directs their winter musical. Chris is the resident music director for the Woodland Theatre Company in Medfield and during the summer he is a music director for the Weston Drama Workshop. In his “free time” Chris directs the music for other area musicals, acts on stage, and sings in area choirs.

St. John Music Survey

As we look ahead to a new season, the St. John’s music staff thought it prudent to take stock of our current music ministry as a whole in an effort to review, with your help, what we do well and discover areas of potential change and/or improvement. By completing this survey, you will provide us with important feedback that we will endeavor to implement as we move through the year. (A paper version of this survey will be available in the bulletin this weekend.)

Once the data is collected and analyzed a summary of the findings will be published in the bulletin and on the website. Thereafter, we hope to sponsor some focus groups after each Mass at which music plays a part so that we may have meaningful discussions about the results and chart a course for the future. Please complete your survey by November 16. We thank you for your consideration and look forward to hearing from you.

Blessings!

– St. John’s Music Staff

Rehearsals for the Family Mass Music and Contemporary Music Groups Begin this Weekend!

Music_Youth Choir LogoIf you attend the 9:00 a.m. Family Mass and enjoy the upbeat, children-friendly, hand-clapping hymns we sing each week, we are always seeking new singers and instrumentalists to join our ranks. All ages are welcome!  Our first rehearsal will be this Sunday, September 8 at 8:00am.  During the school year, we rehearse each Sunday morning at 8am to prepare for that day’s 9am Mass, and we also prepare special liturgies for Grade Level Masses, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Palm Sunday, Easter, and Pentecost. The Christmas and Easter Youth Choirs, directed by Maria Wardwell (781-237-2148 or Maria.Wardwell@stjohnwellesley.org), also join forces with the Family Mass Musicians at those special times of year and have a separate rehearsal schedule.  Please contact Chris Holownia (617-513-0823 or christopher.holownia@gmail.com) for more information about how to get involved.

CME_PhotoThe genre for the the 5:00pm Mass on Sunday evenings tends to be more contemporary, appealing to the young adults/teens and their families, and we seek both vocalists and instrumentalists to rehearse at 4:15 p.m. each Sunday before the Mass that same night. We occasionally plan programming to coincide with the teen Masses and other special events. Please contact Chris Holownia (617-513-0823 or christopher.holownia@gmail.com) if you are interested in getting involved! Our first rehearsal will be Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 4:15pm.

St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday March 17 – 5pm Mass

On Saturday, March 17th, members of St. John’s  music (the various music groups) will be present  to assist with the music at the 5pm Mass.  There will be traditional Irish hymns, one hymn “related” to Ireland and the singing of An Irish Blessing.  (Rehearsal for this Mass is at 3:45pm on Saturday prior to the Mass.)

NEW TIME! The Contemporary Music Ensemble Presents a Free Concert – Sunday, January 22 at 1pm

The Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME) at St. John the Evangelist will host a free concert in the upper church on Sunday, January 22 from 1-2pm, with refreshments following in the Social Hall.  Musical selections will include contemporary liturgical music with an upbeat flair, as well as some pop tunes that have an uplifting message, such as People Get Ready, done by Rod Stewart and others, Oh Heavenly Day, written and recorded by folk artist Patty Griffin and The Rose recorded by Bette Midler.

The Contemporary Music Ensemble grew out of a community project that Julie Freeman developed over a year ago.  Ms. Freeman, director of the group, envisioned a project that would touch and inspire people of all ages to participate in uplifting and meaningful music, while raising money for local mental health agencies who reach out to our teens affected by anxiety and depression.  The concert, Power Of One, took place at St. John’s on November 3, 2010, and was successful in doing just that.  Since that time, our pastor Fr. Tom Powers and the Religious Education team asked if the group could become more of a regular part of the Music Ministry and we are pleased to say that we are in our first year coming together as a group.

The backbone of the group are folks who have been playing at St. John’s in various capacities for many years.  Chris Holownia, Director of the Family Mass and 5pm Sunday Mass, brings years of vocal and piano talent.  Jamie Walker, leader of the professional band The Swinging Steaks and solo vocalist on albums directed toward spiritual healing, brings vocals, guitar and experience with all the technology that goes into making a live sound with electric instruments!  MaryJo Tecce, former Music Director of the Family Mass, lends harmony and on occasion, guitar.  Ashley Freeman and Caroline Eldridge, vocalists, have been singing with the Family Mass and now the 5pm Sunday Mass since making their First Communion.  They have been very loyal to participating, enrolling other friends and growing in their own talents over these years.  Elizabeth Szabo and Marie and Stephen Brown have participated in St. John’s music for many years and were part of the original folk group under the direction of MaryJo.  Newest members to our group this year include four high school students.  Jack Griffin is a talented guitar and bass player who participates in many special band groups at Wellesley High School, as well as having his own band that frequents occasions here in town.  Ian Kinney is a talented sax player who is also involved in special bands at the high school, and Ben Wardwell participates in various choral groups and a jazz band.  Jess Ober is a parish member fromWestonHigh School, where he is a talented choral member and has been in many productions directed by Chris Holownia.

We have an amazing group of young and “young at heart” that come together to praise God while having fun!  We continue to be open to inviting new members to our group and look forward to having the church filled with enthusiasm.  For more information about the concert or to join the group, contact Julie Freeman, frejul@msn.com.

Contemporary Music Ensemble

THE CONTEMPORARY MUSIC ENSEMBLE is a new group that provides music for select Sunday 5 pm masses. These masses will coincide with the evening CCD class schedule. Our next appearance will be on 10/23 at 5 p.m.. Practices will be held about once per month and no formal music training is required- just a willingness to praise God and have fun! If you sing or play an instrument and would like to get involved in this exciting ministry, please contact Julie Freeman, at 781-431-2470 or frejul@msn.com

Music for the Holidays

The music groups (Parish Choir, Family Mass Musicians, Contemporary Music Ensemble) for our regular weekend masses are rehearsing now and welcome your participation. No auditions are required, just a desire to sing or share playing your musical instrument. In addition to those groups there are the special occasion masses and events, i.e. Thanksgiving Day, Parish Christmas Concert, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, where we also welcome your participation. Additional rehearsals for these special events will take place on Sunday evenings, 6:15-7:45pm on Oct 23, Nov 6 and Nov 20 in the Music Office. Understanding that we all have overloaded schedules, you may wish to be part of only one or two of these special holiday events.  All are welcome!
