Powers Hall (Social Hall)
The Theology of Karl Rahner, SJ, one of the major Catholic theologians of the twentieth century
Rahner’s impact on the church at large was profound, especially through his contribution to the Second Vatican Council. Rahner’s theology continues to offer rich resources for the life of Christian faith in our complex world.
Speaker: Richard Lennan is a priest of the diocese of Maitland-Newcastle (Australia) and was ordained in 1983. He holds a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford and a Doctorate in Theology from the University of Innsbruck in Austria. He is a former President of the Australian Catholic Theological Association and is currently Professor of Systematic Theology in the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College.

Christmas Wish 2015

Christmas Wish and TreeThe St. John Christmas Wish Committee is planning the 2015 program and invites new members to join us for this special work of filling Christmas wishes for many children in the surrounding communities of Boston, Roxbury, Lowell, Brockton, and Wellesley. We will gather over 400 children’s requests and fulfill them through the generosity of our St. John community families through sponsorship, shopping and donations. Help us as a parish coordinator assistant, data entry assistant, or phone helper making follow-up calls to St. John volunteers. Want to learn more? To join our committee, please contact Liz Corcoran or Sarah Connolly at the Rectory.

Family Mass Music and Contemporary Music Ensemble

FamilyMassMusicI grew up at St. John Parish – got confirmed, lectored, taught CCD — and I am lucky to say that this is now my 9th year serving as a music minister here. Our program has grown exponentially over the past few years, as you might have noticed judging by the hoards of children singing each Sunday morning. If you are interested in joining the Family Mass Musicians at 9:00 a.m. or the Contemporary Music Ensemble at 5:00 p.m., please email me or contact me at 617-513-0823. We rehearse every Sunday at 8:00 a.m. downstairs in the music office as well as certain Sundays at 3:30 p.m., and there is no experience necessary – only the desire and willingness to sing. I ask only that children be in first grade, but there is no age limitation on the other end! If you play an instrument, you are also welcome to inquire. Finally, there is no need to make a firm commitment; if you can’t make it every Sunday morning, we’d still love to have you join us whenever possible. I look forward to speaking with you!

Join Us Sunday, November 1 after the 11:00am Mass

Marian_Morrison“This Fall, I will be stepping down from my position at St. John’s. As Parish Cantor and coordinator of many special projects for the Parish, I have loved my job and the wonderful staff, musicians and parishioners with whom I’ve worked over the past 25 years. I will always be grateful for the opportunities afforded to me by this amazing Community and will cherish the memories that I have. Please know how deeply I appreciate all of you!”

Marian will conclude her service at St. John’s on Sunday, November 1, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass. There will be a Reception for Marian immediately following that Mass downstairs in Powers Hall (Social Hall) to provide everyone the opportunity to let Marian know: You are a gift, we will truly miss! Come join us!
