Thank You to St. John’s Music and our Ministers of Music

Music, ChoirThe saying “He who sings prays twice” is often attributed to St. Augustine. There is reason to believe that he may not have written that exactly but wrote, “Singing belongs to the one who loves.” The nature of music is such that it can raise our spirits toward happiness, it can evoke memories of times past, it can express our sadness when the burning lump in our throat holds us back. Song (singing), a gift from God, brings us together in community with each other. We thank God for this gift – how?? By singing!

Labyrinth Choir Concert at St. John’s on Saturday, November 16 at 7:30pm – “Wanting Memories” (Free and Open to the Public)

Labyrinth-Concert_PosterOn Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 7:30 pm Labyrinth Choir, a professional choir of 16 voices, will present a free concert called “Wanting Memories” at St. John the Evangelist Church. Dr. Ysaye Barnwell’s song (Sweet Honey in the Rock) is the inspiration for our program: “I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me to see the beauty in the world through my own eyes.” Our concert will feature choral songs and poetry highlighting remembrances and memorials, culminating in the Fauré Requiem, accompanied by Laurence Carson and Suzanne Sheppard. The Requiem, a poignant choral work, will have the added dimensions of staging, lighting and an art installation by Anna Etsuko Tsuri (staging/lighting) and Takashi Horisaki (artist). Please join us for an evening of beautiful songs, as well as a traditional piece, the Requiem, presented in a novel way. The audience will be encouraged to participate in song and poetry. Rehearsals for the Family Mass Music and Contemporary Music Groups Begin this Weekend!

Music_Youth Choir LogoIf you attend the 9:00 a.m. Family Mass and enjoy the upbeat, children-friendly, hand-clapping hymns we sing each week, we are always seeking new singers and instrumentalists to join our ranks. All ages are welcome!  Our first rehearsal will be this Sunday, September 8 at 8:00am.  During the school year, we rehearse each Sunday morning at 8am to prepare for that day’s 9am Mass, and we also prepare special liturgies for Grade Level Masses, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Palm Sunday, Easter, and Pentecost. The Christmas and Easter Youth Choirs, directed by Maria Wardwell (781-237-2148 or Maria.Wardwell@stjohnwellesley.org), also join forces with the Family Mass Musicians at those special times of year and have a separate rehearsal schedule.  Please contact Chris Holownia (617-513-0823 or christopher.holownia@gmail.com) for more information about how to get involved.

CME_PhotoThe genre for the the 5:00pm Mass on Sunday evenings tends to be more contemporary, appealing to the young adults/teens and their families, and we seek both vocalists and instrumentalists to rehearse at 4:15 p.m. each Sunday before the Mass that same night. We occasionally plan programming to coincide with the teen Masses and other special events. Please contact Chris Holownia (617-513-0823 or christopher.holownia@gmail.com) if you are interested in getting involved! Our first rehearsal will be Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 4:15pm.
