So Others May Eat (S.O.M.E.) – January 22 and January 29

We need your help to provide hundreds of sandwiches on Sunday January 22 and Sunday January 29 for the Bristol Lodge in Waltham.  Please bring sandwiches (wrapped and without condiments) to the church kitchen refrigerator.  Since 1995, our parish has helped serve the homeless by providing sandwiches  on the 4th and 5th (when there is one) Sunday of each month.  The sandwiches are distributed to the clients of the Bristol’s various programs for the needy and provide a nourishing mid-day meal for the residents of shelters which are closed during the daytime hours.   For more information please contact Liz Phillips at (781) 237-4430 or Liz.phillips@comcast.net

Help Needed: Dinner for Rosie’s Place on Saturday February 4

A refuge for poor and homeless women since 1974, Rosie’s Place offers emergency and long term assistance to women who have nowhere else to turn. For many years, St. John’s Parish has taken a turn providing evening dinner for the women.  February 4th is our next opportunity to share in this gift. In the past, we have provided meals for 70 women, but the need has more than doubled and on February 4, we will provide meals for approximately 150 women.

  • Rosie’s place is currently in need of sliced ham, baked potatoes, frozen vegetables, rolls and cupcakes.
  • Volunteers are needed to prepare food and deliver it to St. John’s parking lot between 3:15 and 3:30pm on February 4.
  • As the increase in food is substantial, it would be extremely helpful if offers to provide food were made by January 30.

If you are interested in supporting this event and for specific needs, please contact Barbara Tully btully87@comcast.net (781) 235-6182 or Pam McCourt at mccourtpam@comcast.net (781) 235-0612.

Can You Help Make A Christmas Wish Come True? Volunteers Needed to Shop for Christmas Gifts

The St. John Christmas Wish program brings the joy of Christmas to hundreds of children and families from 5 parishes: St. Patrick’s in Brockton, St. Patrick’s in Lowell, St. Katharine Drexel’s in Roxbury, St. John the Evangelist in Wellesley and St. Julie’s Family Learning Program in South Boston.  We appreciate all of the parishioners who have already contributed to the program and we want to invite parishioners to consider volunteering as a shopper or sponsor for the program.  A shopper typically will shop to purchase clothing for families (an outfit and toy for each child) and all shopping expenses will be reimbursed through the program.  Volunteers typically shop for 5 children. Sponsors purchase clothing and a special gift for children in a family age 18 and under.  Approximate value of sponsorship is $50-75 per child.

Please contact me this weekend  if you would like to participate as a shopper or sponsor for Christmas Wish.  Thank you in advance for your generosity in making this program a success.

Warm regards,

Be a “Host Family” at the 8:45am Family Mass!  This is a wonderful way for your family to actively participate in the liturgy – children of all ages can have a role, whether by doing a reading themselves, accompanying a parent or older sibling as they read, bringing up the gifts, or simply processing with the family.  As Host Family, you will:

  • Process in with the Priest Celebrant
  • Sit in the front pew
  • Proclaim the First Reading (will be sent to you ahead of time)
  • Read the Prayers of the Faithful (you may compose your own)
  • Bring up the gifts of bread and wine
  • Process out with the celebrant

From the Service Commission: Christmas Wish Volunteers Needed

The Christmas Wish effort is gearing up and we are looking for new and continuing volunteers to administer this growing program.  The program supports families in St. Johns as well as families in Brockton, Lowell, South Boston, and Roxbury by providing Christmas gifts to about 400 children in need. We are looking for volunteers to assist in any number of ways: coordinating wish lists from the various parishes, matching children to sponsors, shopping, coordinating shoppers and sponsors, processing contributions, and collecting gifts. Please consider giving even a small amount of time to the program as we enter this time of giving.  We will meet on Tuesday, October 11 at 9:00a.m. at the Rectory.  If you have questions or cannot make this time and would like to help, please feel free to contact Kathy Maher at katherine.l.maher@gmail.com or Liz Corcoran at efcorcoran@aol.com.
