As you know, we collect food items for the Food Pantry at our sister Parish, Saint Katharine Drexel, on the second Sunday each month. This November, food assistance benefits dropped for nearly 48 million Americans, including 22 million children. The benefit cut will reduce Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly know as food stamps) benefits, which are already modest, for all households by 7 percent a month. It seems unlikely that Congress will enact legislation to remedy this problem. With this reduction in SNAP benefits it’s important to consider its effect on food pantries, especially at St. Katherine Drexel.
Our next collection will be Sunday, December 8 and we’d ask you to be as generous as your means allow. Thank you.

Question 18: Once our Collaborative with St. Paul’s begins, will there be any training or guidance for the Pastors and other individuals on how to keep things running smoothly as a new Collaborative?
Yes. After a Collaborative Pastor is appointed, his training begins right away. Collaboratives will typically start in June of each year, and training will begin that fall for the combined Pastoral Council, the two Finance Councils, and the two School Boards. Early in the following year (January or February), the Pastoral Teams will begin their training, which will be focused on the New Evangelization, Catholic Leadership, and the mechanics of Collaboration.

This weekend, November 23–24, the Archdiocese of Boston will take up the Collection for Retired Sisters. This collection provides needed financial support for Sisters, now retired, who have served the Archdiocese in countless ways through the ministries of education, health care, and social service. Please give generously in recognition of the Sisters’ many years of dedicated service. Your contribution does make a difference. Most senior sisters worked for years for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. The funds raised through this collection help meet day-to-day needs for retired Sisters, such as prescription medications, nursing assistance, health care, and more. Through their prayer and ministries, Sisters can be found wherever Jesus is found—not only in parishes, schools, and hospitals, but also in their service to the poor, the lonely, and the oppressed. We are all beneficiaries of the devotion of the Sisters to the life of the Church.

At first saints were proclaimed by popular acclamation. Question 17: Once our Collaborative is formed with St. Paul’s, is there a “blueprint” of how we’re supposed to operate?
Yes. After our Collaborative is formed and is up and running, the Pastor will appoint a team to write the Local Pastoral Plan for our Collaborative. The Plan will contain the details of how St. John’s and St. Paul’s will engage in the work of the New Evangelization (reaching out to Catholics who are not currently active in the Church and welcoming them back to the active practice of the faith). Our Local Pastoral Plan will contain the details of how we will run our programs, how we will promote vocations, and how we will engage in radical hospitality. The Local Pastoral Plan will also contain specific goals and how we will measure movement toward these goals. The Local Pastoral Plan will be different for each Collaborative and will be approved by the Archbishop.
