Chris and Matt send us updates on their progress from time to time – this week we have a homily that Chris Holownia gave at the novitiate this past summer.  Please click here to read: Updates from Our Seminarians

His message could not be more relevant today.  Study materials are available for purchase ($16) through the Collaborative.

Christmas Wish Kicks Off This Week… Help Make Wishes Come True!

Christmas Wish and TreeSome children wish upon a star. This year, about 400 children will wish upon the caring generosity of our parish community through the St. John Christmas Wish program, which has been making wishes come true since 1993. Needed clothing and a special Christmas wish gift will go to youngsters in our own parish and in parishes in Roxbury, Lowell and Brockton. Christmas Wish invitations with Helper and Applicant forms have been mailed to all parishioners.  If you find your family needs assistance this Christmas season, you are invited to complete a confidential Applicant form.

Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley Statement on Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting

“Today, we stand in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters who are experiencing the bitter pain of suffering and loss inflicted on them by a senseless shooting in their holy place of worship at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.

On this Sabbath day, a day that is sacred to the Jewish people, we embrace them in their anguish. I join my own prayers with many throughout the Archdiocese of Boston who offer consolation and support to the loved ones of those who have been killed and wounded, and we ask God to bring comfort in this hour of need. We are especially mindful of the first responders who bravely ran towards danger in order to defend others.

I have spent many joyful times with our Jewish friends in my more than forty years as a priest. Our two faiths – Catholic and Jewish – are committed to building a civilization of love to combat the hatred, violence and anti-Semitism in our world. Today’s tragedy will not defeat us in pursuing this commitment, it will not defeat people of good will and it will not defeat the Jewish people.

I have always valued and respected the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam, Repairing the World. It is time for all of us to stand in unison with the Jewish people to repair our world, affirming our love of neighbor as ourselves and working to root out hatred across the world.”

Anton’s cleans all the donated coats and coordinates their distribution to those in need.  Please bring gently used, warm winter coats of all sizes for children, teens, adults and babies in good quality with no rips, tears, broken zippers or permanent stains – coats you would give to a friend (click the flyer for more details) – to the Rectory garage after Mass on the weekends of November 10-11 and 17-18.

Informational Meeting for NPH Summer H.S. Immersion Trip – Wednesday, November 7 at 7:30pm in St. Paul Parish Hall

Join the St. John-St. Paul Collaborative for a one-week immersion trip to an NPH home this summer. This trip is offered only to current high school students, who will be accompanied by five chaperones from the Collaborative.  Experience first hand how NPH USA transforms the lives of children! You will meet the amazing children, staff, and volunteers of NPH and learn about their daily lives. Whether you are new to NPH or a longtime supporter, visiting our homes is the best way to see what we do in action. While the children are in school, you will help out around the home (helping with daily chores around the property, working in the gardens and farm, caring for the babies, working in the kitchen, and viewing the school, etc.). Relax or hang out with the pequeños in the afternoons. We will coordinate activities with the different age groups throughout the week. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to meet with the leadership of the NPH home, tour all of the home’s facilities, and hear the kids’ stories of their lives before and after arriving at NPH.  Note: An NPH USA chaperone will lead and oversee all travelers throughout the duration of the week. All chaperones are background checked, and are experienced volunteers.

For more information, or if you are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in the trip, please contact Anne Mears at anne.mears@sjspwellesley.org
