booksFor the past ten years a group of men and women have met monthly from September to May to talk about a book on some aspect of our Catholic faith. The books have been of modest length, fiction and non-fiction, and on a broad range of topics. Participants choose the books and one person serves as moderator. Often before the meeting, a few questions or points for consideration are distributed to guide the discussion.

There are no dues or other requirements of membership. Our goal is simply one of enlightenment – to help each other better understand the concepts, ideas, people, events, institutions and relationships that make up the Catholic experience. We come together as humble men and women who share an unshakable faith in Jesus Christ, along with the realization that God has blessed us with inquiring minds and the freedom to travel along a variety of paths in our quest for a better understanding of our responsibilities as important parts of creation.

Please join us on a journey of faith, learning and Christian fellowship. We invite you to become active in the Book Discussion Group. Our first meeting is Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7:30 pm in the Parish Center to discuss The Joy of The Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium) by Pope Francis. SJS_New_WebsiteAs our 50th Anniversary nears in 2015, we are celebrating several summer improvements to Saint John School. The school has launched an exciting new website!  This new site provides up to date information for prospective families as well as for the existing school community. The site now includes more colorful photography of our community in action, along with news and event listings and content which provide a glimpse into the many highlights of Saint John School. The new password protected Community Section hosts classroom pages where students and parents can find, the classroom newsletter, important study guides and learning tools as well as links to download forms. You can find the website at www.saintjohnschool.net, or by clicking the picture above.  Other exciting improvements enjoyed by our school community include:

• All corridors & administrative offices freshly painted and floors re-tiled
• School library painted
• Multiple glass encased bulletin boards installed to showcase student work on both floors
• News & events bulletin boards inside and outside main entrance to school
• Updated security system with new main entrance doors
• A framed/encased mural project inspired by ‘The Last Supper’ hand painted by last year’s Grade 5 students

These are exciting enhancements that we look forward to sharing with returning families, students and parishioners! Our annual Parish Pancake Breakfast follows our morning Masses on Sunday – join us for pancakes in the Social Hall and games, pony rides, a petting zoo and more outside!

Classes for all grades will begin as follows:
Grades 1–6: Sunday, 9/21 from 10–10:45am or Wednesday, 9/24 from 3:30–4:45pm
Grades 7–10: Sunday, 9/21, from 6 – 8 p.m.
A final calendar and program information can be found on the Parish website.

Teachers: The kick-off meeting for all teachers is Sunday, September 14, at 10:00 a.m. in Philbin Hall. Please make every effort to attend.
Cluster Families: The opening meeting for those registered as clusters will be held on Monday, September 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Center Chapel Room. Lesson plans will be distributed.

Family Mass_AltarWelcome Back! This Sunday, September 7 the 9:00AM Mass returns to our Family Mass Program. We are looking forward to an exciting year of praying and worshiping together, filled with wonderful liturgies, events and hospitality.

Family Mass Volunteers There are many opportunities for parents and children to participate during the Family Mass. Would your child like to bring up the gifts one Sunday? Or help pass the collection basket? If so, please email our Family Mass Coordinator, Chrissy Cassa to schedule a day that works for your family.

Donuts & Coffee The Family Mass Donuts & Coffee hour is starting back up on September 7th after the 9AM Mass. Please come downstairs to the Social Hall for a cup of coffee, donut or bagel and catch up with friends. New to the Parish? This is a great time to connect with other St. John families!

SJSP Collaborative Logo_SmallThe St. John and St. Paul Collaborative will be formally launched in the summer of 2015.  For the past year, we have been answering Frequently Asked Questions about the new Collaborative in our parish bulletins and here on our website.
Where can I find any questions that I’ve missed?

All of the questions that have been published over the past year can be found here on the St. John the Evangelist Parish website – just click ST. JOHN-ST. PAUL COLLABORATIVE NEWS on the “Quick Links” menu. There you will find all the questions and answers that have been published so far, as well as important background and historical information about the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan, the Collaborative process, and the proposed St. John-St. Paul Collaborative. In addition, The Office of Pastoral Planning of the Archdiocese of Boston maintains a detailed website called “Disciples in Mission” (www.disciplesinmission.com), which contains extensive information on the Pastoral Plan as well as updates on the process and resources for parishes.

Religious-Education-Contemporary_SMALLRegistration: Religious Education registration packets for the 2014/2015 school year were mailed to all families. If you have not received a packet in the mail, it is available for download on the Religious Education page. Please remember to include the $25 per child late fee when registering.

Confirmation: The Parish’s Confirmation preparation is a two year program beginning in grade 9. Except for those enrolled in Catholic schools, all students must complete the two year program prior to being Confirmed. All 10th grade Catholic school students planning to be Confirmed in May 2015 must fully participate in the second year of the Parish Religious Education Program. If you have any questions, please contact Jane Leonard at jane.leonard@stjohnwellesley.org or at 781.237.0141.

Teachers: We are always looking for teachers who are willing to teach any of the grades 1–10. If you are interested, please contact the Religious Education office at 781.235.5337 (grades 1–6) or 781.237.0141 (grades 7 – 10).

First Communion Pictures: The pictures from the 2014 First Communions are still available in the vestibule of the rectory.
