Our Parish Lenten Gift Concludes This Weekend

Welcoming_the_Stranger_Logo_2 The St. John Service Commission would like to thank everyone who has supported our parish-wide effort to join Catholic Charities Boston in Welcoming the Stranger. Our Lenten Gift will allow CCB to restart the resettlement of refugee families in the Boston area, and will also present us with opportunities to develop long-term relationships with these families, by providing volunteer help with English language conversation, life skills and financial literacy assistance, and employment coaching as they acculturate.

If you have not yet had an opportunity to participate in the Lenten Gift but would like to do so, donations are still welcomed through this weekend. The Service Commission will be meeting with Catholic Charities Boston next week to present our Gift and discuss our ongoing involvement.

Online via ParishPay:  Click this link and choose 2016 Lenten Gift under Secondary Collections. (Please Note: you do not need to be a regular ParishPay user to donate online – anyone can make a secure, one-time donation with a credit card. No need to set up an account – just click Start Giving!)

At the Office: Donations can be dropped off weekdays during regular business hours. (Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 4:00pm.  Checks should be made payable to “St. John Parish”, noting “Lenten Gift 2016” in the memo. We will total all funds received and present one check to Catholic Charities Boston.)

For more information please visit our 2016 Parish Lenten Gift page.

Thank you again for your generosity.

An Important Announcement from Fr. Sepe

Fr. Kevin SepeAs diocesan priests we serve at the discretion of our Bishop. The Cardinal has asked me to take on a new collaborative. Effective June 1, I will be the pastor of the newly formed Watertown Collaborative.

Laughlin’s assignment will be effective July 1. Fr. Arthur MacKay will serve as administrator of our collaborative during this transition.

It’s Time to Register for the 2016-2017 Religious Education Program!

Religious-Education-REGISTERIt is time to register for our 2016-2017 Religious Education program.  Please note that we have a few important updates to our registration process: you can now pay your Religious Education fee online via ParishPay, Cluster Registration is on a separate form, Wednesday Grade 1-6 registration will require a parent volunteer component.

Due to the difficulty in staffing and the overwhelming popularity of the Wednesday session, ALL families registering for Wednesday classes must agree to volunteer in some capacity.  There is a list of volunteer opportunities in the Wednesday registration section of the form.  You will not be registered into the program until a volunteer option is chosen.

Complete information and instructions for registering your family can be found on the  2016-2017 Registration Process page.

Divine Mercy Sunday

MercyDivine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, the Octave of Easter. It is originally based on the Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy that Saint Faustina Kowalska reported as part of her encounter with Jesus, where Jesus promises (reputedly said) that a person who goes to Sacramental Confession (the confession may take place some days before) and receives holy communion on that day, shall obtain the total forgiveness of all sins and punishment.  Divine Mercy Sunday points us to the merciful love of God that lies behind the whole Paschal Mystery made present for us in the Eucharist. Let us be renewed in our Acts of Mercy as we continue to journey into the Heart of Mercy this Easter season.

Here are some recent acts of mercy from Lent:

Shared a Toy
Forgave someone for being mean
Drove a woman home from Mass
Visited a friend in a nursing home
Cared for a dying woman
Did things when I was told
Did all my homework and cooperated
Made sandwiches for SOME
Was more patient
Prayed for the sick
Helped elderly neighbor when power went off
Comforted a friend who was sad
Was nice to my brother
Did my chores
Helped a neighbor with repairs
Helped Fr. Sepe
Listened
Was nicer to my sister
Gave clothes to the poor
Forgave myself

Be sure to pick up a Year of Mercy car magnet – a great reminder that there are still several months of this Jubilee celebration of mercy. They will be in the church foyer this Saturday & Sunday.

A Letter from Sr. Evelyn

Sr_EvelynDear Parishioners,

Some 22 years ago, when I was ‘young’ I arrived at this wonderful Parish to serve as your Pastoral Associate. There followed years of learning, growing, helping each other to discern what God wanted us to be and to do.

When Fr. Tom retired last year, I knew it was important for me to remain here, as a way to provide some supportive continuity at this time of transition and change.

In January, I met with Fr. Sepe to share my thoughts, that during these past months, I have come to an increasing knowledge of what I had begun to experience in recent years. And that is my diminishing stamina to minister in the overall way needed for the role of Pastoral Associate. I thought at first, I could just change to part-time and do one or two pieces of our Parish mission.

But in all honesty, I accept the fact that would not work! I have never been able to find my ‘cut-down’ switch. So, I realized I must move on to enable another person to come aboard and embrace this blessed ministry of Pastoral Associate in its fullness.

I will be here until early June. As for my next step, you will be glad to know that I have accepted an invitation from Emmanuel College to become part of their Campus Ministry Program. I am really delighted at this opportunity.

In early September, I will mark 60 years in religious life as a Sister of Notre Dame. The mystery and miracle of all these years are woven into the 22 years with you, in this Parish that I love so much.

Without question, day by day, over these years, God has kept me aware of how fortunate I have been to be here with you: praying, learning, responding to the world about us. For this blessing and for all you have taught me by your welcome, your goodness and your love, I am so grateful.
I know the inadequacy of this letter, but it sends to you, my profound gratitude and love.

Sr. Evelyn

A Note of Thanks from Fr. Sepe

Fr. Kevin SepeOn behalf of the priests, deacon & pastoral associates of both parishes we are grateful to everyone who contributed to the coordinated efforts that allowed for the prayerful celebration of the Sacred Paschal Triduum, including, our music directors, cantors, choirs, musicians, lectors, servers, ushers and sacristans, along with pastoral, administrative, and facilities staff. Liturgical decorations at St. John led by Sr. Evelyn as well as the Liturgical decorating committee at St. Paul made our sacred space appropriately prayerful as well as beautiful for the season leading up to Easter.

Easter attendance was extraordinary at both parishes. This year in each parish we utilized recently installed technology which allowed us to simulcast the Easter Mass to Powers Hall at St. John, and the Parish Hall at St. Paul.

Attendance at the additional times for the sacrament of Confession during Lent and Holy Week was so encouraging. Many commented on the convenience of the Sunday afternoon penance service.

May the Peace of the Resurrected Lord fill your hearts with His new life of Easter Joy.
