I am thrilled to announce that Kelly Meraw has been named Coordinator of Music, Liturgy and Pastoral Care for St. John the Evangelist Parish. As with all of the leadership positions within the collaborative, Kelly’s ministry will be a collaborative position but with her main focus on the St. John community.
Kelly is no stranger to us. She has had a growing role within the music ministry team at St. John as a cantor and director of the choir. She has also been working with bereaved families in preparation for funeral liturgies and with couples preparing for marriage. In her new role, she will also oversee the entire music program at the parish. She is well qualified for the position with a Master of Music Degree from McGill University. And we know already how her angelic voice helps us to lift our hearts in prayer each week at Mass.
Kelly has also felt called by God to a role in pastoral ministry for many years. Before her reception into the Catholic Church at St. Patrick’s Basilica in Montreal through the RCIA program, she contemplated a vocation as a Protestant minister. To that end, she also holds a degree from McGill in Religious Studies. She has long dreamed of bringing her ministerial skills and theological education to bear within her Catholic faith, which she so cherishes. She is most excited about her role as Coordinator of Pastoral Care at St. John. Kelly will oversee the development of adult education programs, ministry to families and will serve as liaison to the parish’s many ministries and commissions. She will also be responsible for the recruitment and training of lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. She will continue to broaden her theological education as she undertakes her new role.
Kelly is a person of deep faith and I have no doubt that she will be a tremendous asset to our parish and collaborative as we all seek to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, service and education. She and her husband Michael, along with their children Ava and Noah, have been deeply committed to the mission of St. John Parish for many years. How blessed are we that God has called Kelly from our own community to serve in this newly created and important ministerial role. Let’s extend a warm welcome to the newest member of our staff!
Yours in Christ,

In the short-term we will have Larry Carson, St. John Music Director, play at the Sunday 9am Mass on September 3. Anne Mears will play all other Sunday 9am Masses until October. Anne will also play at the Sunday 5pm Masses when they begin in the September. Anne Mears is a member of our Collaborative and has been directing and playing liturgical music for many years in the UK and here in Wellesley for the last 17 years, working with the High School Music Group at St. Paul Parish and formerly with St. Paul School. She looks forward to working and worshiping with the St. John community while also continuing her work with the High School Music Group at St. Paul Parish.
Chris’ last Sunday as Music Director for the Family Mass will be August 13, but please join us for a special Family Mass on Sunday, July 23 at 9:00am. There will be a special farewell reception for Chris in Powers Hall following Mass.
A Letter from Chris Holownia, Family Mass Music Director
Dear St. John’s Parishioners:
After a long period of discernment, I have decided to pursue a religious vocation to the Jesuits and will enter their novitiate at St. Andrew Hall in Syracuse, NY this coming August. This announcement is bittersweet, as I have been a member of the St. John Parish community since I was in elementary school and will miss my colleagues, friends, and fellow Family Mass Musicians tremendously. I am both excited and nervous to begin this next chapter of my life, and saying farewell is quite difficult.
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to everyone who has helped to make my experience here such a positive one over the past 10 years: thank you for welcoming me, challenging me, supporting me, and trusting me as I learned the ropes. St. John’s is a special place, and I am proud to call myself a member of this great faith community. Please know that I will cherish my time here for the rest of my life, bringing my career at St. John’s forward with me wherever I go, and I promise to come back to visit whenever I can!
Children in grades 1-8 are invited to participate in the St. John’s Easter Youth Choir. High School Assistants are welcome. There are 5 rehearsals: 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2 and 4/9 at 10:50-11:50 a.m. in the Chapel. The children will sing at the 9:00 a.m. Family Mass on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017. Sign up and first rehearsal is March 12, and registration closes March 19. For more information and to register call Maria Wardwell 781-237-2148 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
St. John’s Parish Choir wishes to extend an invitation to all that have a voice to raise (high school age and beyond) to join us as we prepare to celebrate the extraordinary liturgies of Lent, Holy Week and Easter.
Since our varied worshiping communities come together to celebrate one Mass each day on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday – our desire is that everyone is included – and that no voice is quiet. Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm in the Music Office. Sunday morning rehearsal is at 9:30am in the Music Office.
