Reminder: Parish Annual Appeal

Greetings! You will recall the mailing in late September of the St John the Evangelist Parish (“SJE”) annual financial statements with the Parish Annual Appeal.  Thank you to all who have already contributed. This is a friendly reminder of the importance of your pledge to the Parish Annual Appeal.  The Annual Appeal regularly constitutes almost half of the support to SJE, and is vitally important to all the good works the SJE staff, you and your fellow parishioners do in our community. Please complete the pledge card and drop it in the collection basket or, if you prefer, mail it to the rectory (9 Glen Rd).  Thank you for your continued generous support.

News from Religious Education – November 11, 2012

Faith in Action: Many, many thanks to the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students who so generously donated warm hats for the men at the St. Francis House day shelter in Boston. We collected well over 100 hats.  During the Friends for Good segment of the evening, students wrote personal notes wishing the men good health in the coming cold months and attached them to the hats.

Christmas Wish Volunteers Needed

The Christmas Wish effort is gearing up and we are looking for new and continuing volunteers to administer this growing program. The program supports families in St. Johns as well as families in Brockton, Lowell, South Boston, and Roxbury by providing Christmas gifts to about 400 children in need. We are looking for volunteers to assist in any number of ways:

  • Coordination with one of the parishes and the sponsors/shoppers providing wishes for that parish
  • Administrative support
  • Program communication
  • Shopping

Please consider even a small amount of time to the program as we enter this time of giving. If you would like to help, please feel free to email Liz Corcoran, Kathy Maher, or Christine Kehoe .

Thanksgiving Dinner for Bristol Lodge

Once again St. Johns will be hosting Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless at the Bristol Shelter in Waltham. Please consider cooking or baking for this important outreach program. In order to serve over 100 guests we will need the following COOKED items: ten 18-20 lb. unstuffed turkeys; mashed potatoes, gravy, butternut squash, corn, green beans, stuffing, rolls; cranberry sauce; cider and cranberry juice. Turkeys, as well as the other side dishes, can be cooked as early as the Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving. In addition to having a drop off time at St. John’s on Wednesday, individual food pickups can be arranged.  Please contact Deirdre Heilbron at dgheilbron@yahoo.com or 617-894-4416 if you are interested in helping.
