Lenten Gift Thank You!

Iraqi_families_on_the_runA belated, though heartfelt thanks to Parishioners for contributing $17,789 to Catholic Charities Refugee Relief Services, St. John’s Lenten Gift. As you may be aware, refugee relief continues to be a pressing problem worldwide. Catholic Charities Boston welcomes volunteers to help with airport arrivals, apartment set ups and donation drives (for things like toiletries and household goods). If you are interested in getting involved, please contact the Service Commission.

Calling All Teens – Help Us Celebrate the Sunday 5:00pm Mass!

Contemporary Music We are very excited to share that St. John’s Sunday 5:00 p.m. Mass will feature contemporary music appealing to teens and young adults and their families, and will include teen participation in the various ministries of the Mass. We are looking for more teens to help us celebrate the Mass. Please contact Ronda Dew if you are interested in participating. We will be holding training sessions for Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors and would love to have more confirmed High School students join in that capacity, but also are in need of teen musicians, singers, gift bearers and basket passers. Please join us! All are welcome!

St. John Parish Choir

music_choirIs anyone listening? Those of us in Parish Choir are shouting out to you to say how much we appreciate the thanks and support you send our way – that energy keeps us going. We’re being loud and clear about our invitation to you as the 2016-2017 season begins and we “get back into the SING of things.” Can you hear us? Come a bit closer. Our group includes women and men, young and less young, and we learn as we share our love of singing together. No audition required. Visit us at our rehearsals anytime on Wednesday evenings, 7:30-9:00 p.m. or Sunday mornings, 9:30-10:45 a.m. in the Music Office, lower level of the Church. Any questions can be directed to any choir member, kelly.meraw@stjohnwellesley.org or laurence.carson@stjohnwellesley.org

St. John Book Discussion Group – October 13, 2016

Book for October: Why the Catholic Church Must Change: A Necessary Conversation by Margaret Nutting Ralph.
Thursday, October 13, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., Parish Center

why-the-catholic-church-must-changeMs. Nutting Ralph is director of the Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies program at Lexington Theological Seminary and teaches at St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology. She is the author of numerous books and articles on religion, the Catholic Church and scripture. The title of the book, the author writes, inevitably triggers a wide variety of reactions. While we all believe in genuine progress and needed reforms, many become nervous with the mere suggestion of very major changes in the structure or practices of the Church we have known and loved for so long. This is not a “radical” book in any sense – it is a calm discussion of issues, causes and proposals well-known to thinking Catholics, an effort to improve the conversation we all should be having about the future of the Church.
