From Our Sister Parish, St. Katharine Drexel

This Certificate of Appreciation was presented to St. John the Evangelist Parish by St. Katharine Drexel Parish at a special liturgy and fellowship brunch on April 29, with gratitude for  your  generous response to the needs of their Parish, especially stocking the Food Pantry every month and for your extraordinary gifts at Christmas time.

So Others May Eat – This Sunday, April 29

We need your help to provide hundreds of sandwiches on Sunday, April 29 for the Bristol Lodge in Waltham.  Please bring sandwiches (wrapped and without condiments) to the church kitchen refrigerator.  Since 1995, St. John’s  has helped serve the homeless by providing sandwiches on the 4th and 5th (when there is one) Sunday of each month.  The sandwiches provide a nourishing mid-day meal for the residents of shelters which are closed during the daytime hours.   For more information please contact Liz Phillips at (781) 237-4430 or email Liz.phillips@comcast.net

Adult Faith Formation Update – April 29, 2012

We have mentioned several times the  wonderful small book by Michael Paul Gallagher: Faith Maps – Ten Religious Explorers, from Newman to Ratzinger.
A number of people in the parish have read it and are enthused; it is a book that is serious, profound and very contemporary, yet written in a style and manner appealing and valuable for everyone. Most important, it’s also a great book to gather around with others to ponder and share…deeply enriching, as we learned from a small group led by Sr. Evelyn who met on Sunday afternoons in Lent. Our plan is to organize in the Fall additional meetings, groups to talk about the ten explorers” of the book: John Henry Newman, Maurice Blondel, Karl Rahner,
Hans von Balthasar, Bernard Lonergan, Flannery O’Connor, Dorothee Soelle, Charles Taylor, Pierangelo Sequeri and Joseph Ratzinger. In addition, we will have several lectures on these distinguished men and women, beginning on Tuesday, June 5, with Father Imbelli’s presentation on Cardinal John Henry
Newman.  We urge you to get a copy of Faith Maps! It is readily available on-line, in paperback ($12 – $18) and the parish has a number of copies – contact John Stewart, 617 969-0950 and he will get it to you.

June 5, 7:30 p.m. Social Hall – Lecture and Discussion on John Henry Newman by Father Robert Imbelli, Associate Professor, Department of Theology, Boston College
Newman is considered one of the theological “giants” of the 19th century, an age when belief in God seemed in deep trouble in many countries. His extensive writings reflect his drive to make sense of the Christian vision, to appreciate in greater detail just how we arrive at faith. We too live in an age when many are struggling to understand the role that God plays in our lives. The thoughts and inspirations of Newman are as relevant today as they were when he died in 1890.

April 18, 2012: Summaries of Parish Meetings on the APPC Proposal

Thank you again to those of you who were able to attend the town meetings scheduled to respond to the proposed draft of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan on the last weekend in March.  Summary reports of each session have been prepared and are included in this week’s bulletin (and are available on the Proposed Pastoral Collaborative page on the parish website). Please note that these summaries are condensed versions of the many good questions and comments that were made. The final report to the Archdiocese will include these summaries in addition to expanded remarks and comments that were made on the Pastoral Planning Group website and/or to members of the PPG. While we have high hopes that our input will make a difference, we know this transition is an enormous task with many voices registering their concerns. This very useful input from the parish will help us lay a foundation that will need further development. The project is far from complete, but we have made a very good start, and there is an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and guide as we proceed with this important work. Your input is critical to our parish’s response, and every contribution is valuable. It is not too late to register further responses. Please visit the St. John’s website or contact any member of the PPG.

Current members of the PPG: Carolyn Anderson, John Calcio, Rose Mary Donahue, Svea Fraser, Gerald J. Kehoe (Chair), Dan Kenslea, Mike Nilles, Sister Evelyn Ronan and Fr. Tom Powers.

Thank You!

To one and all who responded our Parish Lenten call to give, whose hearts traveled the distance to East Africa, entered the refugee camps and shared in easing the suffering.  We thank you!  Our parish gift of $14,450 holds a value not to be measured, as it becomes part of the CRS response to a famine and human suffering unspeakable proportions. Once again, as for so many years past, St. John’s Parish has given generously and thereby has once again Given Hope! Thank you!
