Share Your Acts of Mercy

Acts_of_MercyPope Francis’ Year of Mercy calls us to know mercy and show mercy in a very intentional way. We are always doing acts of kindness and we’d like to raise awareness of this gift of mercy by having a Mercy Basket! We will have a table set-up with paper hearts and pens in the front foyer of the Church (or you can print your own at home using the “Printable Hearts” link to the right!) During the week adults and children can write down their acts of mercy on a heart and then on each weekend, place it in the basket that will be next to the offertory table at the back of the Church.

During Mass each week throughout Lent, we will carry the Mercy Basket up to the altar with the bread and wine presenting them as gifts of ourselves. So take time throughout this week to be mindful of ways you show mercy to others . . . through forgiveness or through acts of kindness to others in need.

Into the Heart of Mercy: Jesus, born of Mary, had a human heart as we do…

CK7gxi-WoAAL3peThe Name of God is Mercy. The face of God is Jesus. Jesus, born of Mary, had a human heart as we do…

A human heart works with four chambers and a circulatory system. The chambers direct the flow of blood, connecting the lungs, a system that cleanses and renews repeatedly with every heartbeat and breath. As Mary pondered the things of God in her heart, this Year of Mercy is creating a time for each of us to focus on our own hearts.

Our hearts operate on a physical and spiritual level. Just as our hearts function physically, responding to our mind, body and environment, our spiritual hearts are a place to ponder, pray, and connect ourselves with God and others. Our heart is a tabernacle for God, a space of love and forgiveness, a space of safety in the loving mercy of God, a place to encounter mercy and grace, a space where God can connect with us. God works in the human – in Jesus, in Mary and in each one of us! This is a time for seeking with God, our source of all love and mercy, how we can be His hands and hearts on earth now.

As we begin this Year of Mercy, let’s ponder in the tabernacle of our human heart, our relationship with God – our own human heart relating to the sacred heart of Jesus, seeking a way, relating heart to heart with others.

What Place Does Mercy Have in Your Life?

Logo_OfficialIn Miscericordiae Vultus (The Face of Mercy), Pope Francis explains that mercy is the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Pope Francis often reminds us, we are all, he included, sinners in need of God’s mercy. The first and only step required to experience mercy is to acknowledge that we are in need of mercy. The mercy of God is his loving concern for each one of us. No one is excluded from God’s mercy. The Lord never tires of forgiving us: never! God always forgives. God forgives always. God forgives not with a decree but with a caress. God’s mercy is the beating heart of the gospel.

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

Year_of_Mercy_ICONPope Francis has announced an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy which began with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on December 8, 2015, and will conclude with its closing on November 20, 2016. The Adult Faith Formation and Service Commissions have been inspired by the Pope’s call and would like to recognize the ways we as a Parish are already performing spiritual and corporal acts of mercy and raise consciousness of more that we can do. Throughout the coming weeks and months look to this section of the website as we explore how we, as a parish and as individuals, can respond to the Pope’s call for mercy and kindness.

Please Help Us Respond to Pope Francis’ Irresistible Invitation

Year_of_Mercy_PagePope Francis announced an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy beginning with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on December 8, 2015 and concluding with its closing on November 20, 2016. This is an extraordinary time for us, for in the words of Pope Francis: “At this time we are called to gaze even more attentively on ‘Mercy’ so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives.”

There are a multitude of opportunities for us to participate in Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy. Many parishes are inspired to show tangible signs of individual and group actions of mercy. The Adult Faith Formation and Service Commissions have taken on the challenge and propose entering into this Jubilee Year with our own expressions of mercy. Guided by the Spirit we can accomplish great things— even a million acts of mercy!!!

We have high hopes that this initiative will engage every single person—for there is no act too small to build a growing sense of compassion and kindness which will defeat the “culture of indifference” that Pope Francis describes today.

PLEASE join us and others to consider ways to show our commitment to becoming more effective signs of God’s action in our lives! We will meet on December 2, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Powers Hall (Social Hall). Please contact Anne Wachtmeister  for more info. “Mercy is not just a pastoral attitude; it is the very substance of the Gospel message.” Pope Francis

Help Make Wishes Come True!

Christmas Wish and TreeSome children wish upon a star. This year, about 400 children will wish upon the caring generosity of our parish community through the St. John Christmas Wish program, which has been making wishes come true since 1993. Needed clothing and a special Christmas wish gift will go to youngsters in our own parish and in parishes in Roxbury, Lowell and Brockton. You can help make wishes come true by:

  • Sponsoring a child or family – fulfilling specific clothing and gift requests
  • Helping us shop – for children who have not been matched with sponsors
  • Making a financial donation – to be used to purchase clothing or gifts

Sign up online: Christmas Wish

Financial donations can also be made online:  ParishPay
