Introducing Our 2014 Parish Lenten Gift – Central African Republic

For many years in preparing for Lent, St. John’s parish has made the decision to reach out to one particular suffering amid so many in the world.  During this season of prayer and giving, our parish has a rich history of sacrificial giving.   Last year’s gift was to the parish of St. Margaret Mary on Staten Island, NY for Super Storm Sandy rebuilding.  Previous gifts were for famine relief in East Africa and rebuilding and medical supplies in earthquake devastated Haiti.  Our Lenten Gift strengthens each of us individually and the parish as a community of faith, as we give witness to Christ’s call to “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). Lent’s clarion call to love extravagantly is what Lent is about.

Why Central African Republic?

  • St. John’s parishioners connect with causes with great needs or suffering where we can provide relief.
  • The Central African Republic (CAR) gift helps to relieve great need for shelter, food and basic materials to “restart” the lives of the thousands who suffer from hunger, disease and insecurity from being displaced from their homes due to civil unrest.
  • Fr Nestor NongoSt. John’s personally knows Bishop Nestor-Désiré Nongo Aziagbia of Bossangoa. He is a priest of the Society of Missionaries of Africa (SMA) who was in residence at St. John’s in summer of 2006 while attending Boston College for a master’s degree.  Reverend Fr. Tom Powers has remained in contact with Nestor as he returned to his country as a pastor and now as the Bishop of Bossangoa.  Bishop Nestor has testified at the United Nations and the US House Subcommittee on Africa.
  • This project, so far away from Wellesley and to benefit those we will never know, seems to perfectly fit with Pope Francis call for practicing Catholics to realize the grace they have been given and accept responsibility for helping others experience the same grace — especially the poor, the sick and others left on the peripheries or margins of society.

What is the Central African Republic?

The CAR, located in the middle of Africa, gained its independence from France in 1960.  The country has a population of approximately 4.5 million, is about the size of Texas and has an average annual income of $800 (one of the poorest countries in the world).  The CAR was democratically ruled from 1993 until 2003 when there was a military coup.  The government has been marked by corruption, human rights violations and outside country interference.  The most recent instability commenced in December 2012 when political rebels, the Selekas, a coalition of rebel Muslim groups as well as mercenaries from neighboring Chad and Sudan, used force to overturn the government and installed their own President. The brutality of the Selekas who destroyed and stole property, killed, abused and tortured civilians gave rise to a large opposition group, Antibabalaka, a local militia groups who identify themselves with the Christians and have committed similar atrocities as the Selekas.

Families_CatholicMission_BossangoaChristian and Muslim church leaders describe the conflict as political and not religious as each group seeks power and control over the country’s significant mineral and natural resources.  Newspaper reports put the number of displaced people at over 1.1 million with Bishop Nestor housing and feeding up to 30,000 people on the church grounds.  Violence has been somewhat reduced recently as France deployed 1,500 peacekeepers which joined 5,000 African Union peacekeepers. However, this large country remains a very unsettled environment with great need.

This Year’s Gift

We will offering our support to Bishop Nestor and the people of his diocese through Prayer (Petitions of the Faithful and in CCD classes) and a Lenten Gift collection on April 5/6.  Proceeds will be transferred to Bishop Nestor safely through his diocese bank account in France.  Bishop Nestor will have the discretion to use proceeds to meet immediate needs (food, shelter and medical supplies) as well as long term needs (rebuilding the church and homes) since he is in a fluid situation with such great needs.

How blessed we are to be able to act on Pope Francis’ message to use the grace we have been given to help others attempting to gain hope in rebuilding.

A Thank You Letter from a Christmas Wish Family

Christmas Wish and TreeBelow is a letter St. John Parish received this week from one of the many people who were helped by the Christmas Wish Program this season.

Hi – My name is Yvette. I am part of a family in which your parish helped with gifts this season. I know these things are given anonymously and it’s OK. I understand! But I wanted to thank all of you, on behalf of myself, my family and every family ever helped along the way.

I wanted to say that knowing that someone out in this world has taken their time and love to share what they have with my family is the greatest gift ever! Just knowing that someone cares is enough. It’s beautiful! It is what Christmas is all about “The birth of our Lord brought joy, love and peace,” and that’s what you’re doing by helping others.

It warms my heart to know someone else besides me cares and loves my children and wants us to have a nice Christmas. Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart, for sharing your blessings with us. May the Lord bless you and yours Have a wonderful Christmas! Know you are loved and appreciated.

– Mom, Yvette

Christmas Wish Thank You to all of our St. John Community

Christmas_Thank YouThe Christmas Wish 2013 Committee would like to thank each one of you that generously donated time, contributions, shopping efforts, coordination of parish family needs, data entry, attending meetings, bundling packages, matching gifts to families, and many tireless efforts to make Christmas. We worked with 152 families and over 400 children in St. Patrick’s in Brockton, St Patrick’s in Lowell, St Katharine Drexel in Roxbury, Julie’s Family Learning Program in South Boston, and St. John the Evangelist in Wellesley to provide gifts of clothing, toys, special gift wishes, and even food cards to make the holiday special for so many.

Over 240 St. John families helped with this effort by family sponsorship, shopping, financial donations, program co-ordination, religious ed community service, and gift delivery. We extend a special thanks to McCabe Movers for their donation of the truck for gift delivery again this year. We thank Bill Logan and Steve DuFour for volunteering to deliver the gifts to Lowell and Roxbury, joined by Steve’s son. We would also like to thank our committee of Kathy Maher, Christine Kehoe, Becky Kannam, Paula Gomez, Peg Tally, Corinne Spinale, Pat Colton, Alyson Karpowicz, Joyce Farah, Donna Buckley, Liz Corcoran, Susan Logan, Patti DuFour, Denise Brown, Deidre O’Kelly-Lynch, Beata Pearson, Sally Miller, Maureen Newman, Mary Cagliuso and the Parish Office Staff.

We welcome all parishioners to join us next year in this heartwarming holiday effort of the 2014 Christmas Wish Program.

Thank You!

Thank You 2A very big thank you to all the families who donated cooked turkeys and side dishes to the soup kitchen at Bristol Lodge in Waltham. Thanks to your efforts we delivered enough food to serve over 100 guests. This year marks our 4th consecutive year of providing a Thanksgiving feast and it’s remarkable how generous our Parish response has been to this appeal. One of our parishioners prepared TWO turkeys and another (at age 10 our youngest contributor to date) baked a beautiful pumpkin roll. Thanks so much for your boundless generosity. – Deirdre Heilbron, Service Commission

St. Katharine Drexel Food Pantry Collection Needs Your Help

feed the hungryAs you know, we collect food items for the Food Pantry at our sister Parish, Saint Katharine Drexel, on the second Sunday each month. This November, food assistance benefits dropped for nearly 48 million Americans, including 22 million children. The benefit cut will reduce Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly know as food stamps) benefits, which are already modest, for all households by 7 percent a month. It seems unlikely that Congress will enact legislation to remedy this problem. With this reduction in SNAP benefits it’s important to consider its effect on food pantries, especially at St. Katherine Drexel.

Our next collection will be Sunday, December 8 and we’d ask you to be as generous as your means allow.  Thank you.

DSC_0077Dear St. John’s Parishioners:

The Service Commission gives you a big THANK YOU!  Thank you for your enthusiastic response to our invitation to Come and See how the parish is living the gospel through service. You learned of the broad and varied service programs run by so many parishioners. You learned how volunteers can help on a monthly, annually or sporadic basis. Many of you volunteered to join a specific program and even more took home the information pamphlet to become more aware of service opportunities at St. John’s. Lastly, everyone enjoyed the cider, donut holes and post-Mass reception.  Please email the Service Commission members with any questions or volunteer requests at SC@stjohnwellesley.org, and learn more  on our website.  Thanks again for your strong response.
