A Final Message from Fr. Tom

Our Ninth PastorThis coming Tuesday, June 2, St. John Parish will begin a new chapter. Together with St. Paul Parish we will begin a new journey as ‘Disciples in Mission’. Our Parishes will be led by one pastoral team and we will welcome Fr. Kevin Sepe as Pastor and Fr. Arthur McKay as Parochial Vicar.  I am confident that St. John will greet them with the same warm hospitality, enthusiasm and cooperation that has always been shown to me and the rest of the staff.

I am very grateful for the many kind words, thoughtful notes and expressions of best wishes that you have offered to me over these past weeks. The memory of these days and the years that have preceded will be a source of great strength in the days ahead. My prayers are with you. Let me close with a blessing I often share:

May God bless us and keep us, may He make His face to shine upon us, may God be gracious to us and grant us His peace.

– Fr Tom

A Note of Gratitude to the Parish Choir

Parish Choir and Gusts at the May Anniversary MassEach of you are owed an enormous treasury of thanks for all that you have done this past year as choir. Your continued contributions of time and talent are evident when you come together. Our liturgies are enhanced immeasurably by your devotion to the sacred art of music and vocal praise. Throughout the year the liturgies beginning with the First Sunday Choir, on Thanksgiving morning, the entire Christmas season, during the weeks of Lent, Easter and the weeks that followed, Fr. Memorial Day Prayer

memorial-day-500x666We remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day.

We pray that God will hold our servicemen and women in His strong arms, and cover them with His sheltering grace and presence.

Many Thanks for a Wonderful Celebration!

DSC_0314We were blessed with a beautiful day for a beautiful celebration! Following the 9:00 Family Mass Celebration, families began to gather outside to enjoy breakfast or lunch as the kids played in the bouncy houses and delighted in balloon animals.  Our 11:00 Mass with Cardinal Sean O’Malley, concelebrated by Fr. Powers, Fr. Connelly, Fr. McMillan, and Msgr. Lind, was a prayerful and moving celebration of the life of our parish – past, present and future.  To read the full version of our Parish History, which was excerpted in last Sunday’s bulletin, please visit the website. The audio from the 11:00 Mass, which will include the Cardinal’s homily and the beautiful music of our Parish Choir, will be posted to the website soon.

A special note of thanks to all the parishioners who worked so hard to make St. John’s May Anniversary weekend a special time for all! We would especially like to thank the Anniversary Committee Members: Carolyn Anderson, Norm Boucher, John Calcio, Chrissy Cassa, Rose Mary Donahue, Mimi Eldridge, Janet Schreiber, Jim Stokes and Christine Tierney.

With a special note of appreciation to Dorothy Cullinan who created the Anniversary logo that was so effective in focusing our attention towards both of St. John’s Anniversary celebrations in 2015.

Also a note of thanks to all the vendors who participated in this parish event: Bank of America, Bon Me!, Burke’s Funeral Home, Captain Marden’s Cod Squad, Haynes Management, Peter’s Pizza, Roche Bros., Taylor Rental, Town of Wellesley Police Department and Whole Foods.

Men’s Clothing Drive for St. Francis House Coming June 6-7

stfrancishouse_largeHappy Spring! Every year in June, St. John’s parish conducts a men’s clothing drive for St. Francis House, the largest day shelter in New England, serving over 800 men and women on a daily basis.  St. Francis House distributes clothing to the homeless in Greater Boston, averaging 250 sets of clothing per week.  To help meet this ongoing need, we are collecting men’s gently-used, everyday clothing such as jeansT-shirts, sweatshirts, hats  and footwear, as well as new socks for their Foot Clinic, which provides foot care and socks to homeless clients.

We hope you will take the time for a quick spring cleaning, and remember to bring the items to our church garage on the weekend of June 6-7.

Right now, the highest needed items include:

  • Men’s pants (especially jeans – given out on a daily basis)
  • T-shirts (extremely important – given out on a daily basis)
  • Footwear (extremely important)
  • “New” Socks
  • Sweaters & Sweatshirts
  • Backpacks/duffel bags
  • Coats, hats, gloves, and scarves (larger sizes in extreme needed)

Please do not send in children’s clothing, used socks, or any discolored items. If you can put your items in boxes or secured bags, and label it with the general
contents, it would be a great help with sorting. Thank you for your generosity!

If you need to drop items off sooner due to travel schedules, etc. or have any questions please contact Shilan Yeung, either email shilanhappy@gmail.com or text/call at 508-801-7072.

Thank You from Fr. Tom

Fr_Tom_2006There are times in life when an act of kindness leaves us speechless. The many events of last weekend have left me not only speechless, but also overwhelmed. Your kind words, thoughtful notes and presence at those events have given me much strength as I prepare for the journey ahead and added to all of that, your most generous ‘travel fund’ has unleashed my imagination with all sorts of possibilities. Please know that I am profoundly grateful to each of you for these moments and for all the ways we have shared our faith journey here at St. John’s. – Fr. Tom
